Joel Greenberg, Artistic Director, Studio 180 Theatre

"I first saw The Chinese Lady at Barrington Stage, in Massachusetts, and I was immediately struck by the play's power to engage and, at the same time, to make the audience complicit as they viewed and stared at Afong Moy. Lloyd Suh has crafted a play that addresses current political and social issues by referring to a period long past. The overlay of past on present adds layers of meaning without ever attacking or faulting the audience. Suh's conscious effort to draw and sustain the viewer's gaze is unique at a time when discussions of appropriation and otherness too often demand that we choose sides. The Chinese Lady is an exploration rather than an interrogation."

David Yee, Artistic Director, fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company

The Chinese Lady is one of those rare plays that quietly takes its hold and starts operating on you before you even notice it has happened. The play transforms from a theatrical experience to one that is deeply human, as the line between performer and audience gets redrawn as something more urgent, ancient and inexorable. While the play draws from history it is, nonetheless, stunningly contemporary in its execution, its hindsight and its passion to recognize the eponymous subject within our own fractured times. Lloyd Suh has created some of the most compelling theatre coming out of the Asian North American community in the last several years, and I’m thrilled we finally get to introduce his extraordinary artistic voice to a Canadian audience.”
