Lloyd Suh has crafted a play that addresses current political and social issues by referring to a period long past. The overlay of past on present adds layers of meaning without ever attacking or faulting the audience. Suh's conscious effort to draw and sustain the viewer's gaze is unique at a time when discussions of appropriation and otherness too often demand that we choose sides. The Chinese Lady is an exploration rather than an interrogation."
