Guo Pei: Fashioning Imagination, currently showcased at M+ in Hong Kong, is a monumental display that elevates fashion to the realm of high art. As the first large-scale presentation of Guo Pei’s work in the region, it offers a compelling exploration of the designer’s artistic vision, deeply rooted in Chinese cultural heritage while engaging with contemporary themes. Running until April 6, the show is a testament to Guo Pei’s status as one of China’s most celebrated designers and a significant figure in global fashion. It is nothing short of breathtaking.
Curated by Ikko Yokoyama, this exhibition unfolds as a dialogue between Guo Pei’s exquisite designs and contemporary art. Organized into five thematic parts—The Joy of Life, New Tales from the East, Transcending Space, Ethereal Mythologies, and On Dreams and Reality—it encourages attendees to explore the intricate layers of meaning embedded in Guo Pei’s creations.
Each garment showcases meticulous craftsmanship, featuring elaborate embroidery and luxurious materials that evoke both imperial Chinese dress and modern haute couture. Her designs draw inspiration from rich Chinese traditions while engaging with global influences in architecture, literature, and visual art.
Her pieces transcend mere garments; they are elaborate stories woven with threads of history and imagination that reflect her personal journey and the historical context of Chinese fashion. Gowns inspired by traditional attire are reimagined through a contemporary lens, creating a dialogue between past and present that enhances their significance.
Highlights include the Yellow Queen from the 1002 Nights collection, famously worn by Rihanna at the 2015 Met Gala. This striking yolk-yellow gown features a dramatic four-metre train adorned with shimmering gold and silver embellishments that celebrate female empowerment. The rich velvet texture catches the light beautifully, showcasing its opulence and inviting admiration from across the room.
Equally captivating is the L’Architecture dress from 2018. Inspired by Gothic architecture, it incorporates iconic elements such as spires and stained glass crafted from silk linen, steel wires, and resin. The interplay of textures allows viewers to appreciate its intricate details up close.
From the 2007 Elysium Collection, the Amazing Journey in a Childhood Dream dress reflects Guo Pei’s early fascination with origami through its delicate folds that create organic shapes reminiscent of a garden in full bloom. While viewers cannot touch the garments, they can observe how light interacts with the fabric, revealing iridescent sparkles that enhance its visual allure.
The exhibition culminates with the Magnificent Gold (Da Jin) gown from the 2006 Samsara collection.
In a video accompanying the display, Guo Pei explains that this dress is her masterpiece, taking over 50,000 hours to create. Its dome silhouette resembles a lotus flower, featuring exquisite silk and linen adorned with gold and silver embroidery, metal coils, and Swarovski crystals. The intricate patterns evoke the rising sun, embodying Guo Pei’s dedication to reviving traditional Chinese craftsmanship and mythology through fashion.
Her own philosophy emphasizes cultural preservation while embracing modernity, making her work resonate deeply with audiences worldwide. “I believe our creative endeavours today are the foundations of tomorrow’s culture,” she says, highlighting her commitment to preserving traditions while pushing creative boundaries.
Shanghai Tang, the Hong Kong luxury fashion house founded in 1994 by the late David Tang, a prominent figure in modern Chinese fashion, has established itself as a significant player in contemporary Chinese culture. On Tuesday night, the brand’s enduring dedication to celebrating Chinese heritage was highlighted at its 30th anniversary party held at PMQ, a creative hub in Hong Kong that showcases design and innovation.
