As we approach the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards, set to take place on Sunday, April 27th (Hong Kong time), there’s a particular sense of excitement in the air—not just in Hong Kong, but across the Chinese diaspora. This past year has seen remarkable progress in connecting Hong Kong cinema with audiences in Canada and North America at large. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of distributors who are championing these films beyond borders, many titles are now being promoted and screened more widely than ever before.
Hong Kong films have become significantly more accessible, with far shorter delays between their release in Asia and their theatrical run here. In some cases, they are even launching in tandem with regional cinema titles from across Asia, enriching our local film landscape with diverse perspectives.
In 2024, we have had the honour of supporting this movement as a cultural partner. We've also had the rare opportunities to speak directly with some of the filmmakers behind this year’s most celebrated titles, gaining insight into their creative journeys, challenges, and aspirations.
By now, many of the nominated films may feel familiar to Canadian audiences as stories that resonate.
