In a night of celebration, tradition, and philanthropy, The Fortune Ball took place on November 25, 2023 at the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites. Welcoming over 700 guests, the event not only showcased vibrant traditions, it also gathered strong support from the Chinese community for Oak Valley Health's Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH).
Supported by lead sponsor Green City Communities Inc. and presented by TD, The Fortune Ball demonstrated the active involvement of the local Chinese-Canadian community in giving back to their local hospital.
Jennifer Hsiung of CP24 Breakfast emceed the event, along with special performers, including Wushu Project's captivating dragon dance and The Caverners Beatles Tribute playing a series of classics from the British rock icons. The performances symbolised the harmonious blend of the East and West in the Markham community.
Alan Kwong, Co-Chair for this year’s gala and founding member of MSH Foundation's Fortune Leadership Council (FLC), emphasized the significance of the event for the community. "Gatherings like The Fortune Ball not only reinforce unity, but also ensure that we are continuing to nurture the health and well-being of our neighbours for the future.”
MSH’s collaboration with the Chinese community has deepened its impact, encouraging more Chinese entrepreneurs and generous leaders to contribute to MSH's mission. Established in 2016, the FLC is led by esteemed members like Alan Kwong 鄺國雄, David Ho 何應燊, Gordon Chan 陳熙宗, Kenny Wan 溫建業, and Stephen Li 李志雲, plays a crucial role in fostering this collaboration.
Fête Chinoise, a longstanding friend and partner of MSH, joined the celebration with the donation of a coveted silent auction prize: two tickets to the cocktail party and showcase at our Signature Event in Toronto. Our coffee table book-styled magazines offered guests a glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of Chinese culture, which they got to take home to add to their collections and personal libraries.
The Fortune Ball achieved remarkable results by raising an impressive gross amount of $800,000, highlighting the generosity of sponsors, donors, and the entire community. The donations will support Markham Stouffville Hospital in acquiring the latest medical equipment and delivering exceptional patient-centred care for the community.

Our "Love at Mid-Autumn" campaign returned for its fourth year, culminating in a successful Thank You Cheque Presentation Event last Friday at the Scotiabank North Tower. Born in a time of uncertainty, the campaign continues to spread love throughout the community, achieving a new milestone by raising $65,000 for Scarborough Health Network and the Fête Chinoise Cultural Foundation.
