WHEN FASHION MEETS CULTURE
Fête Chinoise invited our publication’s lead fashion stylist Ashley Galang to curate some highlights around the world of designers who are exploring Chinese cultural elements in their work. As an Asian-Canadian herself, Ashley enjoys seeing more diversity in both the industry’s creators and the garments that grace the runways. From high luxury to a passionate new fashion student, she has pulled fascinating styles together for many of our editorial shoots, including feature stories on Simu Liu, Tyler Shaw, Meng’er Zhang, and Linda Chung. From subtle cues to literal combinations of the East and West, the fashion world is tapping into a new era of cultural inspiration and yielding interesting, rich, and unique bodies of work. Fashion represents a changing world, from ideas and creativity to challenges in manufacturing and supply chains, to the online and offline shopping experiences of a myriad of consumers. Here we explore its role in the expression of identity and cultural identity.
SAU LEE
SAU LEE is a luxury fashion house made for today’s cosmopolitan heroine. It began with a desire to form a new genesis of female glamor in Eastern-inspired sartorial sensuality made for the modern generation of polyculturalists; to empower the everyday woman to live her reverie in new ways that she creates, not what was created for her — to be the hero of her own story. Envisioned by women for women, every style is meticulously designed for our heroine to feel effortlessly beautiful, captivating, and deserved. Through wearing the perfect fit, our mission is to bring women up as glamorous Sartorialists who appreciate their body, embrace their sensuality, and express their special powers.
SAU LEE
gigi wang
Chinese-Canadian designer GiGi Wang's philosophy is to integrate Chinese traditional clothing culture into contemporary fashion trends, and to help sustain and grow traditional Chinese fashion aesthetic in today's hyper changing world. Cubism was Gigi Wang’s inspiration for this season’s collection. Cubism is defined as the beauty of geometric shapes and the aesthetics created by their arrangement and combination. Objects traditionally observed or represented from a single perspective are instead presented from a multitude of viewpoints, conveying the continuity of time and space.
SARAWONG
SARAWONG unveiled its Fall Winter 2023 Collection paying tribute to Suzhou’s Elegant Gardens and Kunqu Opera, on February 25th, during Milan Fashion Week. The collection titled ‘Dreams in Paradise’ was inspired by the culture of Suzhou, a city known for its poetic elegance and literati past. It balances the delicate elegance of Suzhou’s renowned Garden architecture with the muted beauty of Kunqu opera costumes. It celebrates traditional Chinese culture with colourful fringes, cloud shoulders, and fabric patchwork. The color palette was inspired by Kunqu opera costumes, and it features purple, cherry blossom pink, and soft goose yellow. For the season, Sarawong aims to bring a relaxed and happy mood, and to provide a way for people to heal themselves and find their own peace even in uncertain times.

HUI MILANO
Zhao Huizhou, a Chinese designer with a masters degree from the Politecnico di Milano where she learned about the charm of Italian fashion, does a perfect job of bringing together classical oriental beauty and timeless elegance mixed with the avant-garde of the contemporary. The identity of the brand draws upon the extraordinary Asian attitudes towards trimmings that mix with the precision of clean and minimal design, a style that is born from Zhao’s passion for art and the contamination with fashion that is capable of bringing together multiple languages.
Chinese culture values symbolism. On important occasions like the wedding banquet, the ingredients used are chosen with care, and each dish carries different meanings. A typical Chinese wedding banquet menu includes either ten or twelve dishes, symbolizing "full and perfection" or implying that the couple will have happiness throughout the twelve months of the year. For this special feature, we invited Rovey Chinese Catering and Private Dining, to demonstrate twelve classic Chinese wedding banquet courses and introduce the meaning behind each dish.
